6 Simple rules to eat healthy for a lifetime

If there is one thing that is a part of everyone's resolutions, New Year or otherwise, it is to be getting healthier and fitter. Regrettably, there is no miracle cure for this. The silver lining here is that a lifelong commitment to simple things will keep you in fairly good stead. Here are six simple rules to eat healthy for a lifetime...

1 EAT WHEN HUNGRY
This sounds like a no-brainer right? Well, it is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, in our fastpaced, always-facing-a-screen kind of lifestyle, eating has become something we do on the side, like a background activity.Munching snacks while watching the telly and lunches spilling over the laptop keyboard sound familiar, right? So much so, that we have forgotten what it is to really experience hunger. This was the main reason people often like to fast -because it makes us conscious of our hunger. When you're really hungry, you can actually smell the food cooking two houses away from yours. That is the true power of hunger. It enables your senses to naturally gravitate towards food. The message here is to be mindful of your hunger and to feed the hunger consciously. No more mindless munching.

2 CHOOSE WATER OVER ANY OTHER BEVERAGE
Unless we're talking about babies, for whom the best beverage is their mum's breast milk, water is the best beverage there is. It has no calories, more importantly, no sugar, and does its job. The ever-expanding market for commercial beverages presents a tremendous attraction to children and youngsters, who want to pick these coloured aerated sweetened-to-death drinks over oh-so-boring water. It is a mindset we need to help change. Just cutting down on sweetened beverages can help people lose lots of excess weight and cut down the dangers of too much sugar consumption, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, to name a few.

3 LET VEGETABLES PLAY THE LEAD ROLE
In most meat-centric diets, vegetables are often given the stepmotherly treatment. Who on earth would want to eat boiled Brussel sprouts, broccoli or cabbage? Explore the various exciting cuisines in the world, create beautiful salads and vegetable dishes, mix and match various colours and textures and embrace the world of vegetables. There's fibre, antioxidants, minerals and so much nutrient density in veggies, that it's criminal to lose out on their goodness by not consuming enough of them. Eat your meat if that is your preference, but don't neglect the vegetables.

4 CHOOSE FOODS CLOSEST TO THEIR NATURAL FORM
Each morning, tons of urban people reach out for the box of cereal and milk for a quick breakfast. Ever wondered how far that cereal in the box has come from the real cereal grown in the fields? Look at the list of ingredients in most cornflakes brands and you'll see at least five ingredients, including a preservative called BHT. Don't eat anything your great-great-great grandmother wouldn't recognise as food. The next time you pick up a packet of bread from a supermarket shelf, you'll realise that even your grandmother won't recognise half of the ingredients as food, let alone your great-great-great grandmother. To put it simply, choose a whole grain over processed cereal. Choose real fruit plus plain yogurt over processed fruit yogurt. Choose real chicken over commercially sold chicken sausage and so on.

5 PORTION CONTROL
By labelling foods as fat-free, sugar-free, lowcal etc. the food industry has lured us into believing that if it is labelled healthy, it can be eaten with gay abandon. Extra virgin olive oil is great for health, but if you have a ladle full of dressing on your salad, it will add up eventually. There's a simple guide to estimating portion control with your hands. Protein or meat should not be larger than the size of your palm. Eat only as much carbs as will fit in your fist. The size of your thumb (knuckle to tip) is a good way to measure oil or fat. Open your palms and join them together, and you have a measure for vegetables. And dessert should be roughly a finger length. If your body has gradually gotten accustomed to the supersize culture, train it to accept normal quantities of food using these tricks. Using a small plate to eat food also helps.

6 EAT HEALTHY-ISH
Believe us, when we say, healthy-ish is a word these days. There was an interesting report recently that spoke about this latest trend.Put simply, it means if you are taking good food decisions most of the times, it is okay to indulge on the other occasions, like an 80-20 rule. This helps you stay true to yourself, without the unnecessary stress of dietary perfection. Eating healthy-ish allows us to stick to healthy eating commitments for life, rather than a fad that lasts a few months. It keeps us from beating ourselves up for eating that slice of cake on a birthday or enjoying ice creams with our kids in the summers. So remember this word, healthy-ish. It is a good one! These are my simple rules to eat healthy for a lifetime. Each of them quite small on their own, but they all add up to make a considerable difference to our health and well-being.

http://www.patrika.com/thumb/phpThumb.php?src=http://img.patrika.com/upload/images/2016/04/07/2-1460013967.jpg&w=646&h=416&hash=1460018358

A gadget that counts calories for you

GoBe
GoBe

GoBe, a wearable device, counts what you eat, as well as what you burn. While you can manually record your intake with Apple Watch, FitBit, or Jawbone devices, GoBe takes a different approach: it biometrically tracks your glucose levels, translating specific types of spikes into food groups (like sugars or carbohydrates), and uses the data to calculate exactly how many calories you’ve consumed in each sitting. It’s all about accuracy. There’s just one caveat: the design, which looks bulky, with a roughly one-inch-wide, oval-shaped display that dwarfs small wrists. But if you get pass that, the device will start shipping in June and promises to help you keep a check on those extra holiday calories.!

Mealworms in burgers, recycling wasted ingredients... diet fads get quirky in 2016

The global includes diet chart of 2016 everything right from the weird to the bizarre. Bugs, seaweed and tree water, among others will take the year by storm. Here are some of the quirkiest fads expected to keep you fit...

SWAP COCONUT OIL FOR AVOCADO OIL

The # avocado was used around three million times on a photo-sharing site last year. Touted to be `the oil' for 2016, it is high in mono-unsaturated omega-9 fatty acids as compared to last year's fave coconut oil that has more saturated fat. Packed with minerals, vita mins and antioxidants, avocado oil can replace olive oil as a salad dressing, thanks to its similar taste and texture. While coconut oil has a smoking point of about 350°F , avocado oil has around 500°F , making it ideal for cooking and baking too.

SEAWEED IS THE NEW SUPERFOOD

Slimy underwater leaves and weeds including nori, kelp, green algae, spirulina and sea lettuce are high in protein, minerals, calcium and vitamins. They are being recognised globally for their nutritional value.

GET BUG-GED

This year, bugs as food will go global. Inexpensive yet palatable, they are a sustainable protein source for the ever increasing human population. With people becoming more open-minded to having mealworms in burgers, crickets in bars, ants in drinks and grasshopper salads, chefs are integrating bugs in dishes and teasing the palates of patrons.

CARBS WILL MAKE A COMEBACK

Carbohydrates have always been considered bad, but this year they will make a huge comeback. More people are trusting good carbs once again. Last year's not-sohealthy Keto diet (avoiding carbohydrates) will be bowing out of the scene.

ADDITIVES WILL TAKE A BACKSEAT

Globally, large companies that offer packaged food have already started removing artificial dyes and flavours, and hydrogenated oils in their food. Synthetic colours in cereals and snacks are also being eliminated.
NOOCH SAUCE WILL BE TOPPING IT
With the vegan trend still going strong, the cheesy-nutty flavoured nooch, similar to dairy-free parmesan, is expected to be seen on store shelves. Nooch, fortified with vitamins, is nutritional yeast and derived from sugarcane and beet molasses. It is a healthy protein and can be used as a yummy sauce on salads, pasta for nachos and even on popcorn.

SAY BYE-BYE TO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

The new year will see a conscious avoidance or minimisation of refined sugar and table salt. Considered the root cause of many health problems, banning these items will lead people not just towards good health but to a fit, shapely body as well. In 2016, the trend will be to accept all kinds of natural sugars and stay away from artificial sweeteners. Fruit sugars have nutritional benefits -vitamins, minerals, fibres and phytonutrients can take care of your sweet palate and help you maintain a healthy weight. Abroad, `green colas' are using stevia instead of sweeteners. Agave syrup or agave nectar is hailed as a diabetic-friendly sweetener that doesn't spike blood sugar levels. Apart from this, there are syrups made from coconut, barley, brown rice, dates and apples.

USING `WASTED' INGREDIENTS

Last year, chef Dan Barber from Manhattan turned food waste into cuisine. He re-formed burger buns from stale rye bread topped with rye breadcrumbs and used discarded cheddar with patty made of wasted carrot and beet pulp. Many upscale restaurants in the UK and US are using wasted ingredients like fish ribs, pulps of vegetable and fruits to cre ate fresh dishes. Certain chefs in India follow the same rule on a small scale, and this trend is only set to get bigger with the emphasis on being eco-conscious.

EGGS WILL BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Worrying about dietary cholesterol is also taking a backseat and that is what will lead to eggs securing a place in the spotlight. Eggs will be an important ingredient on restaurant menus and gourmet food.

CHEF-MADE MEALS

Ordering your meal from a restaurant?
That is so last year. There are exclusive meal-delivery services that have chefs prepare customised meals for you. The prices do not burn a hole in your pocket, yet offer seasonal menus and an exclusive curated experience that restaurants don't provide.
